Through the Referral Looking Glass

Step through the looking glass of referrals and an entire world of lucrative possibilities opens up.

It’s tempting to think of referrals as those recommendations delighted clients share with the people they know, but referrals encompass a whole lot more.

As well as client and customer referrals, there are referrals from strategic referral partners. These are complementary businesses that serve the same or an adjacent audience as you. They want experts to help their clients before, during, or after they work together, so they are more than happy to make relevant introductions to professionals they trust.

Peer referrals are another type of referral relationship. Experts who do the same thing as you don’t always have the capacity to take on new clients, or they are not a perfect fit in terms of niche, specialism, or location.

Then there are employee referrals, where employees and team members recommend the company or individual to people within their personal and professional networks. This strategy can be developed more than you might imagine.

Community referrals can be very lucrative. In this scenario, members of professional communities, associations, masterminds, networking groups, or membership organisations make introductions between members. You can even build your own referral-rich mastermind group with experts in adjacent industries.

While perhaps not classed as referrals per se, affiliate agreements are another powerful word-of-mouth strategy. When someone sends you a quality prospect, they receive a predetermined financial reward or commission if that connection converts.

And then there’s influencer referrals. Respected voices within a niche recommend a provider to their audience or privately to individuals who ask them for recommendations. It’s always a good idea to build genuine, trust-based relationships with influencers in your sector.

Some or all of these referral types may well suit your business, depending on your goals, network, and industry. Each can be optimised, personalised, and systemised, leading to compounding growth and improved brand reach.

And despite what some naysayers preach, there’s no upper limit to referrals if there’s a strategy behind them.

Especially when someone privately feeds you facilitated introductions to amazing strategic partners.
